Don't
Leave It Too Late
 Our
clients normally buy domain names because they reflect their business
name or products and services that they offer. What is often not
understood is the need to completely monopolise the frequently used
suffixes that are available. There are many different variations
of domain suffixes in the World, but you only need to concern yourself
with the 'Main English Speaking Domains'. These are (.com, .co.uk
& .net).
You
should be sure to check and purchase the hyphenated and non-hyphenated
versions of your chosen domain. The reason for registering multiple
domains is that in many cases when using the Internet, people have
the opinion that words are divided by hyphens. Unfortunately there
are equally as many people that assume multiple words to be connected
'asoneword' when referring to Internet addresses.
This
is not a problem where your client sees the domain name or clicks
on a link, but if you ever gave out the domain verbally, as part
of an email address for example, it is good practice to prevent
any confusion over hyphens by owning both variations.
Not
to forget that it prevents anyone else from registering these variations
and 'poaching' any of your business!
Why
should you buy multiple versions of domain names?
The
main benefit of registering numerous domain names is in understanding
how the Internet really works. If someone wants the services that
you offer then there are usually two ways in which they can find
you. The first you are in the process of covering by purchasing
memorable domain names for referrals, repeat business and clients
making a 'good guess' as to your company's web address. Don't forget
that an infinite number of domain names can all point to the same
single web site!
A
good example of a clear domain strategy is that demonstrated by
newreg.co.uk. This is an ultimate example with hundreds of related
domains all leading browsers to the same web page. e.g. www.newreg.co.uk,
www.reg.co.uk, www.privateplates.com,
www.car.co.uk,
www.cherishednumbers.com and so on.
The
second way often used by browsers is to use the Internet search
engines. What you may not know is that in registering numerous domain
names 'a domains suite' you are vastly increasing the chances of
a better listing in the main search engines. Most US and UK search
engines prioritise the domains resident to their place of origin.
For example Yahoo.com, which is in America, will likely give a better
listing to www.registrationsdirect.com
(US commercial domain name) than to www.registrationsdirect.co.uk
(UK commercial domain name) and vice versa in the case of ukplus.co.uk!
Search
engines only allow you to register a domain name once, which limits
you to one set of key words (usually restricted by a fixed amount
of characters). However, if you have more than one domain name you
can submit more than once to the same search engine, using different
key words. Two domains are better than one and four domains being
better than two!...
